Large Language Models and the MedicoLegal Field
Oct 02, 2023Large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT hint at the future potential of AI to significantly augment human capabilities in areas like research, writing, education, and problem-solving. While judicious oversight is warranted, LLMs open new possibilities if applied thoughtfully.
For researchers, LLMs offer convenient access to vast information relevant to their work; however, it is essential to recognize what sources of information they may not be able to access. By conversing with LLMs, researchers can rapidly get overviews of topics, initial facts to verify hypotheses, suggested papers to review, and spark new ideas or angles to explore through an intelligent brainstorming partner.
LLMs can assist writing by providing feedback on drafts, catching grammar and style errors, and offering alternative wording to enhance clarity. For educators and students, LLMs allow self-directed learning by answering questions on complex topics and generating study materials. Their interactive nature supports active learning. In problem-solving, LLMs can analyze data to surface insights, evaluate solutions, and highlight aspects warranting further consideration. Their ability to link concepts and facts helps make sense of complexity.
However, LLMs have clear limitations. They should not replace full literature reviews, original analysis, or domain expertise. Outputs need verification for accuracy and to ensure no “hallucinations” occurred or false references cited. LLMs are tools to enhance human skills, not replace them. With responsible design and oversight, LLMs promise to complement humans in remarkable ways, expanding knowledge, accelerating discovery, and unleashing creativity. However, thought leaders must continue studying their impacts to ensure these technologies are integrated ethically and equitably, centering human values. While implementing such technology would require rigorous oversight and continuous evaluation, the potential benefits of improving healthcare efficiency and patient outcomes are significant. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of this tool is beneficial and essential.
